Winter Field Trip

This piece was inspired by large groups of children on field trips I’ve seen on the sidewalk while driving down the road. This image is specifically inspired by preschool children who still require a fascinator so they will not get away, most times being a leash that holds them in line. Although these children are so restricted by the leash they are attached to, their spirit and energy remain unhindered. Their expressive nature exudes no matter where they are placed. To me, this is exactly what it means to be young. This piece celebrates the true essence of being a child.

In woodland art, spirals are often interpreted as "holes in the sky" that represent a connection to the spirit world. Curved or squiggly lines protruding from figures or surrounding shapes are called spirit lines, and represent the power of the spirit within each living thing.

Acrylic and Porcupine Quills on Canvas
25 x 25
$350

Quills are a traditional art medium for many First Nations peoples including the Ojibwe. They must be harvested by hand, soaked, washed, and can be dyed before being worked with. All quills should be conditioned with a small bit of oil (traditionally, bear grease was used) once (1) per year to avoid drying and cracking.

Nothing Lost, Everything Gained
May, 2020
Acrylic paint on vellum paper
100 cm x 180 cm
My piece, a dedication to my grandmother, expresses her firsthand interpretation of visual impairment. She has lost the majority of her vision and thus, labeled by society as disabled. At times an extra pair of eyes may be required; however, she is fully capable of living her day-to-day independently - while being the most joyous individual in my life. Her ability to overcome the loss of humanity's most-relied sense leads to my conclusion that being visually weakened, for her, is not necessarily a “disability.”
Rather, it is a process of loss and gain.
The parchments echo the one depicted within the painting. Titled Blindness, it recounts my grandmother's perception of life while gradually losing her vision. Written in her native tongue, Mandarin, a translation in English is also provided. I used strikethrough on all words regarding sight; I wish to illustrate that upon removing these terms, the text could signify any other condition, that restricts what one can do.
However, one must notice that the parchment my grandmother is reading in the painting. I left it as a pure white blank slate. I aim to symbolize the mentality of those who have embraced their condition - in my grandmother's case blindness - who no longer view it as a disability but a new beginning in life.

Justice RBG
PRINTS AVAILABLE! $30 each
In our modern society with dark times surfacing with bigoted views the contrasting battle for justice of the intellects is being led by a feminist warrior; the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In this piece, I have taken Raffaello Sanzio’s tondo of personified “Justice” holding the scale and the sword; now gavel. The inscription that says, "She gives justice to all." remains. To represent the minorities and groups of people she has impacted I have left hints in the putty, rainbow flag wings, women symbol in the folds of material, skin colour variance, opposition, and more. The cherubs will all be wearing a different collar of RBG’s, as each collar represents a decisive court decision made public through these collars of code. To replicate the mosaic of Sanzio’s tondo, Columbia law school Alumni Association speech and manuscripts from United States v. Virginia of Ginsburg's have been cut into small squares to act as a foundation. I hand cut each word and rearranged them to reveal meanings and clues. I was eager to create this empowering piece as a symbol of hope in stormy times.

$240
Janet Evans has been creating glass art for the past 14 years. Her hot shop pieces include paperweights and vases. She has worked with fused glass, creating plates, bowls and jewelry. Torch work is now her primary focus, creating both wearable glass art as well as exploring larger sculptural pieces.
"Working with glass is, to me, like capturing light in solid form. While hot glass is a very challenging medium, it is playing with its luminous quality and colours that has become my passion.
I use humour and whimsy to make my art accessible to everyone, while using glass as the medium in my representations of nature to underline the fragility of our environment."

This painting is an amalgamation of shapes and colours from museums and galleries that I know and love. I brought together my memories of these geographically and topically disparate spaces using cubism. Many elements were inspired by characteristic architecture, while others were inspired by the content of museums. While my painting was informed by the art of the past, it also draws significant inspiration from the design of contemporary spaces: clean, colourful, and bold. The title refers to two things. First, the museum’s functions as a collector of the knowledge and history of a civilization. Second, the recollection of my own past, and my visits to these places. For me, the museum is a place of discovery, where an encounter with an object or story may blossom into lifelong interest and love.
I would like to note that my understanding of the museum has become more complex with time. It is more than a place that I can happily remember, it is an institution with a past and present rife with injustice. I'd still urge people to visit and learn, but to do so with a critical eye!

Rooms
February, 2021
ink on paper
30 x 40 cm

$35

In this piece I wanted to play with line and the idea of something being stretched and distorted. It depicts a room being pulled down from the left, then the same room being pulled up from the right. The composition was set up so that the viewer’s eyes could circle between the rooms, following the curved lines and comparing the details between the rooms. The viewer risks being trapped in that endless cycle, stuck in those distorted rooms, similar to how people are stuck in their own rooms and routines during the pandemic.
This large print was made by carving the designs into two blocks of linoleum. The thin lines were carefully carved and details were packed into the image. Ink was then rolled onto the surface and the blocks were printed one at a time.

Moments of my Winter Time
January 2021
Mixed media; acrylic ink, pencil crayon and acrylic on watercolour paper

$30 each ($90 for series)

This series of images were inspired by the experiences I had outside of the house during lockdown this winter. All these images are recreations of situations I’ve either been in as a bystander or actually participated in myself. These moments were ones that made me smile and brought light into a very segregated dark time, seeing these wonderful moments allowed for an increase in my appreciation for others and how simply they can spread joy.

I’m fascinated by long exposures and how they alter the world we think we know. Restless water becomes silky smooth; stars become light trails; moving people become ghosts. Here, I’m presenting traffic in a new light. Each image contains context of what it should represent. However, each image is also made stronger by the added abstraction.

Even since the pandemic started, I have felt a burning desire to document as much as possible, and in doing so, I have found great joy in finding special moments within the mundane. This image shows a man walking down the street, amid the construction, unaware that pigeons congregate behind him, as if in worship. When processing this image, I wanted to emphasize the surrealism of the scene.

Ottawa holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, I have heard too many people disparage the city for being too boring; for being empty; for not being “a real city”; for not being Toronto or Montréal; for not being enough. I’ve always wanted to prove that Ottawa is a real city; Ottawa is enough. People in trench coats cross the city in other photographs. Well, guess what? They do in Ottawa as well.

Owning My Voice is Scary
- Paris Barnes
I can speak but I'm afraid to
Afraid for you to see the way my mouth
moves
Afraid to slow down and to breathe
Afraid to be the real authentic me
the unapologetic and wonderful me
With that I'm afraid to own my voice
I'm afraid to stutter.
This voice that like many others is different
Mine however shakes, it breaks, it stops, it's a small part of me, it's not all of me
Owning my voice is scary, scary as hell but here's the thing
I can either choose to own it or to hide behind it
I can either choose to stay silent or to speak up
To speak proudly and unashamed
To be me.
My Brown Skin
Paris Barnes
My Brown Skin
Beautiful but dark
Beautiful but disliked
Beautiful but unseen
My Brown Skin
Smooth but not light
Smooth but not rich
Smooth but means nothing to society
My Brown Skin
Covered but has layers
Covered but has sins
Covered but has the pain they caused
My Brown Skin
Is so different
Is the only one
Is my ancestor's beauty
My Brown Skin
Has been through the struggles
Has been through the pain
But is now walking in the human race
My Brown Skin
Will always have a voice
Tries to gain power
Tries to gain self-confidence
Will always fight for the injustice that comes with being in it
My Brown Skin
Elusive
I am not elusive,
I am in the living ache
Of your heart,
In
Acorns, pine cones,
In
Willows not actually weeping.
In
Birds not deciding
What to sing.
-P. Hodges 2021
Only a glass
Will take transparency to heart
Will fill your quenched soul
With eternal freedom.
As cherry lips crack under the brink of dawn
Memoirs of thunder roar immensely
Champagne rolls off the tongue
And laughter tastes ever so sweetly
The air breathed in
Contaminated with sin
The poisoned mass escapes purity
Trembling kisses & Shaky breaths
Consume the identities
of every soul present.
Only a glass will
Purify the emptiness of
today
tomorrow
And every day that passes.
